1947 Monk Cruiser

In 2006 Renee and I bought this 1947 Monk 30′ cruiser, built by Skansie Brothers in Gig Harbor.

Links to posts about the years-long restoration we started, but soon realized never ends.

1947 Monk designed cruiser, built in Gig Harbor by Skansie Bros. 30\' LOA, 9 tons max. displacement, cruise 9 knots at 75% power. Less than one gallon per hour at 75%, top speed 12 knots. 8\' Avon tender. Raytheon Chartplotter, GPS, Marpa radar, depthsounder, DSC from Icom 422 VHF. New Teleflex hydraulic helm, Morse engine controls, dual fuel tank guages, All new DC electrical system, including wiring, switches, circuit breakers, voltmeter and power panel. All new AC shorepower system. New parking windshield wipers, Classic nav and anchor lights with bright LED bulbs. New interior including all floorboards, cedar ceiling, new galley with real ceramic sink and propane range with auto shutoff safety control system with sniffer in bilge. 2 way refrigerator, pressure cold water. Well-insulated engine box, cabin heater from engine coolant system. Engine cooling is closed system. 2 6 volt batteries, one 12v battery. New Yanmar 110HP turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel and gear, new prop, new exhaust system. Twin 30 gal. diesel tanks with new top-feed plumbing. Dual Racor filters. 80 hours on engine since new. All new mahogany from the gunwales up. Hull is bronze-fastened (refastened 2011) Port Orford Cedar. I do some touch-up on the aft gunwales where I had faired the new transom cap wood into the rounded gunwales. After a coat of grey primer, I lay on the first coat of Interlux Brightsides white. It will take about three coats to get it covered and shiny. After the second coat, the white is covering pretty well. Nice to finally have a dry day to do some painting! I hang the curtains that came with the boat originally. The outer windshield covers are re-installed - they are snapped in place. The interior showing the privacy curtains. The original windows were shorter than the new windows, so the curtains are a couple inches short. I took a wide angle photo of the forepeak using a new iPhone app called DMD, seems to work pretty good, but I sometimes get distortion where the photos stitch together because I don\'t hold the phone steady enough. Another DMD shot of the interior DMD photo looking forward This DMD photo stitched together pretty well. The aft end of the boat.
